Four guys, one cello

• So what do you do in a musi­cal fam­ily when you’ve got four musi­cians, four bows and only one cello?

  Appar­ently, you do Ravel’s Bolero for eight hands.

  We saw “Bolero” per­formed in con­cert last month, and then this crossed my desk just a few days after­wards. True brilliance.

  Well, it seems to me that this ver­sion short­ens it by a cou­ple min­utes, right? Which is a bless­ing really. It’s a musi­cal cliche at this point, so it should be unas­sail­able, but I always thought it was a lit­tle on the repet­i­tive side. You just can’t wait for that big dra­matic key change to happen.
