It’s fall! I’m drawing as fast as I can!

• Who’s in charge around here? I’ve been wait­ing all year for autumn to offi­cially start, and then two weeks ago it sud­denly leapt out of the start­ing gate like Whirl­away on a fast break. Hon­est to good­ness, the trees were green and they were green and then in one hour, half of them went orange.

  I’ve been tak­ing a class to revive my draw­ing skills, and so it mat­ters that it’s get­ting away from me. Because once it turns to Novem­ber, the only col­ors you need in your palette are white, gray, brown, gray-brown, brown-gray and white again. Or you could skip col­ors and just draw ver­ti­cal marks with a char­coal pen­cil. (“Trees — win­ter sym­phony #3 in grey” by Grace the Drawler. Price: $15,000.) (Hey, I can dream, can’t I?)
  
  But I’ve got five or ten min­utes till then, so I’ll busily lug all the col­ored pen­cils and all the water­col­ors and what­not out to try to cap­ture those col­ors — bur­nished leaves, plum shad­ows, organdy light, cop­per bark.

  I’ll never get it, but it’s fun try­ing.
