Yes, Virginia, there is a St. Nicholas

  • Grownups playing Santa for grownups. I assume it’s been going on in other cities as well, but Kansas City has an anonymous guy who goes around the worst neighborhoods giving out $100 bills (story here).

And in the past few years, he’s picked up some helpers who contibute as well:

Secret Santa, who arrived in Kansas City more than 30 years ago with less than $20 in his pocket, also is known around Kansas City as the $100 bill man because that’s his “weapon” of choice. People who look downtrodden or down on their luck are likely to get hit with one or more of the bills near Christmas.

This Yuletide, Santa is giving away $75,000, including about $23,000 doled out on a three-day spin through hurricane-torn Mississippi earlier this month.

Up north in St. Joe, the Adopt-a-family program was bailed out by a couple more anonymous Santas. On Monday, they still had 349 families that hadn’t been adopted.

But by that afternoon, an anonymous donor stepped forward and gave a monetary contribution that helped take care of about 300 of those families … Tuesday morning, yet another donor who asked to remain anonymous made a large donation. And it was enough to take care of the remaining families.

It was an amazing coincidence to me that in my daily reading that morning, I had read this from I Timothy 6:17–19:
Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but to put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share. In this way they will lay up treasure for themselves as a firm foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of the life that is truly life.
