Den of thieves update

• A cou­ple years ago, Greg the Hus­band wanted to see if he could get me some of the wooden eggs painted with iconic ren­der­ing for a Christ­mas present. He found the one shown here offered on ebay — nicely done, obvi­ously John the Bap­tist as we can tell from the shaggy hair and red wings, right? But here’s the good part. The per­son offer­ing it up for sale had this head­line: Rare Icon of Jesus in His Later Years.

  In His later years? You don’t have to be St. Gre­gory the The­olo­gian to fig­ure out the wrin­kle in that the­ory. When Greg gen­tly sug­gested to the seller that he had made a mis­take and that the icon was prob­a­bly John the Bap­tist, the seller kindly thanked him and changed the head­line to read: Rare Icon of John the Bap­tist … in His Later Years. Greg knew then he had to have this once-in-a-lifetime item, and the story has been part of the enjoy­ment of hav­ing it.

  That’s ebay for you. Won­der­ful things, amaz­ing prices. Hard things aren’t hard to find; rare things aren’t rare at all. But … the seller could be any­one and the item could be any­thing, so caveat emp­tor – let the buyer beware.

  So why bring it up now? Well, because Greg just sent a link my way. (link HERE) Yes, it’s true. For a mere mil­lion dol­lars, you can own a Bible signed by Jesus Christ.

  Per­haps in His later years.

  (HEAVY sigh) I’m pretty sure the thing is just someone’s idea of a joke, or maybe just a long­shot that only has to come in one time to be worth it all. But what do you want to bet some peo­ple aren’t going to be sure?

  Yep, that one was a clas­sic. As I recall, the woman who sold the sand­wich seemed totally sin­cere. She didn’t sound like a scam artist, and she def­i­nitely wasn’t being ironic.

  This guy, on the other hand, seems like he’s a lit­tle of each. Just guess­ing, though.
