Admittedly, I’m a vegetarian year round, but I do enjoy a Yves Hot Dog now and then.

(shamefacedly, sometimes cooked with biscuit dough wrapped around it. Yum.)

    Thanks.

My dd just had to mention the smell of McDonald’s not 30 mins. ago as we were passing one. Oh so helpful.

  • Depending on the manufacturer a hot dog may not actually have any meat in it. Last time I checked saw dust was okay for Lent.

  • LOL. Sure, what was I thinking? And hey, talk about high fiber content!

I hadn’t thought of veggie hot dogs. Some of that Morningstar stuff is so much like the real thing that it puts me into that endless dialogue about whether it’s in the Lenten spirit or not.

But then, I have a hard time getting enough protein if I don’t do things like that. I really don’t like fish or seafood.

  • :)

you remind me of how this past weekend, as we ate our vegan meal, my kids would have these conversations at the table like: what do you like better hamburgers or hotdogs? etc…

this also reminds me a fourth of july many years ago (before we were Orthodox) when some friends asked if they could bring their Adventist friends, saying ‘we will take care of their food.’ so they show up with those hot dogs in the can thing, and as i read the instructions it says ‘cook until delicious.’ to which i replied to my friend, “i dont think i have that much time.”

    a Blessed Lent to you!

  • Morningstar hot dogs.….hmmmm.….tried that.…once. And I tried all the competitors, too, just to see if there was something out there that was edible. And tonight had veggie sausage from Morningstar. All I can say is that I don’t feel so good right now.…and it’s not a spiritual sickness. Like the Beatles sang, “The best things in life aren’t soy.… but you tell it to the birds and boys”.

However, I do highly recommend the Morningstar Blackbean Burgers — they’re honestly what they are and not soy in disguise. No texture / flavor problems. Just good.

Yep, you can’t make a hot dog out of vegetables unless a cow eats them first.
My experience with “soy meat substitutes” is I’d rather eat the real deal and go to confession. Now if I could only figure out how Pei Wei makes their tofu that firm and with the slight crust, I could eat tofu every night. Besides, I’ve split open many hot dogs and have yet to find a backbone in any yet. They’re a lot like shrimp! :)

  • I’ve never tried Morningstar hot dogs, so I have to take everybody’s word for it that they’re not that good. Their faux chicken patties though are great — maybe just a little dry. And yes, I second the opinion on the blackbean burgers.

Hm. Wonder where I can find a 24-hour supermarket. Oh yessss, I’ve got those gluttonous impulses completely under control. :-D

  • Eating at a resturaunt one night during Lent some years ago for an office meeting, some of us were ordering vegetable plates. One of the men there said loudly, “Vegetables aren’t food! Vegetables are what food eats!”

At an all day school event during Lent, the school had a snack bar and NOTHING there was suitable for Orthodox meals. I compined to my daughter who said, “Really, mother, who can say what is actually in a hot dog? It might be okay.”

I tried the soy substitues and decided that if you aren’t supposed to be eating meat, you shouldn’t PRETEND to be eatting meat.

That being said, yesterday I, too, was beseiged by thoughts of McDonalds.… because I was at home, I’d have had to put on shoes and go out. So glad I wasn’t running errands — I may have succumbed.

  • PS We’re only beginning Lent! We’d better get prepared for a lot more tempataion!

Thankfully, I find it easier the longer I go — who wants to fall after traveling a long way?

  • Well, that’s certainly right. This particular craving was a bit of a surprise. I don’t usually get Lenten cravings and I’m not even that partial to hot dogs.

Favorite Lenten fast food: Taco Bell bean burrito and a side of rice (hold the cheese). Pretty yummy.

  • One of the gentlemen at Church always brings his doctored up Taco Bell bean burritos to the Agape meal afterwards. Though technically Lenten we often say that the quantity and quality of the pot luck is so grand that it can hardly be Lenten.

  • That’s true. We have potlucks where you hardly notice the lack of meat, dairy, etc. But then, I’ve realized that part of the reason for that is because there’s so much camaraderie and good fellowship that you can’t be broken-hearted and contrite. I figure that that is part of the ongoing joy of being in the church. It’s a year-round kind of thing.

  • It’s definitely a year round thing. I love Orthodoxy because it’s the one true faith. I love Church because they are my family.
