Gotta give the Catholics a little credit. They know a marketing opportunity when they see one. Are you getting this, camera guy?
I’d kind of worry about the kind of penitents you’d get from this pitch, though. Wouldn’t they be a bit likely to talk real fast and gesture around? Plus, they’d be looking for the camera guy all the time.
(If you’ve never seen the ShamWow commercial, you may miss the reference. Check it out HERE.)

This reminds me of this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_BEZaPN8gUY
All right, that was funny. I hadn’t heard of that movie. Some would say the Catholic Church has already been trying too hard to dumb things down.
But here’s the rub: That SoulWow thing above is a real ad campaign. If you go to http://soulwow.com, you’ll see their Webpage, along with a link to find your local parish and a credit “Brought to you by the Roman Catholic Church of Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island.” It was done by a pretty slick ad agency, so I assume there were some big bucks behind this. And I’ll say again, what kind of confessions do you get when this is the way you solicit them? It makes the blood curdle!
That youtube link was the best part of the movie. Don’t rent the rest of it. My wife swears that this can’t be real, but she’s not nearly as cynical as I am.
I used to think I was cynical. Unfortunately, the world just keeps getting sillier, so now I’ve been downgraded to a realist. That SoulWow thing is real, for real. HERE it is linked to the homepage of the Brooklyn diocese.
Oh, and by the way, if the Orthodox Church ever starts thinking that something like this would be a good idea, I’m becoming Druid.
