Withdrawal from the NCCC requires formal action on the part of the participating body. Ten years ago the Ukrainians were actively involved (at least there were Ukrainian Orthodox clergy at an event in Dallas and they were on the official list of delegates — I was a PCUSA delegate back then).

It could be that even though the Archbishop has said he no longer wants to be part of it, that the Archdiocese or the Sobor has not made the formal decision to sever ties. The NCCC bureaucracy is relatively quick to do things, but being true bureaucrats, if they don’t have the proper documentation signed and in triplicate, the request will never get carried out.

You had said in your previous post that SCOBA was a member of the NCCC. Technically, SCOBA has (or at least had — my info is a decade old) observer status. That means that they have voice but no vote in actions. There are two reasons for that. First, SCOBA has no authority, so they could only speak for themselves, not the member communions. They therefore didn’t meet the qualifications for full membership. Second, not every SCOBA body was a member of the NCCC. It would therefore be inappropriate for SCOBA to be full blown members.

  • What an excellent sum-up this was! Many thanks, Jim!
