St. Mary of Egypt Sunday ’09

  • So we’re here again already. Lent seems to have flown by this year, and Mother Mary of Egypt stands where she always stands, as a beacon that lights up the last week of Lent and points the way to Holy Week and Pascha.

I had all kinds of things I wanted to say about her. It seems to me that after having her as my patron saint for over 20 years, there’s a kind of fellowship between us (though I’m inclined to say that I pick my friends much more effectively than she picks hers, and definitely got the better end of the deal). We’ve shared a lot of times and she has seen me through some calamities.

So I wanted to give some personal input that I thought would be of general interest. But in the end, I find I really can’t do better than just refer to her story as told by St. Sophronius.

Actually, not to keep the secret of a king is perilous and a terrible risk, but to be silent about the works of God is a great loss for the soul. And I, in writing the life of St. Mary of Egypt, am afraid to hide the works of God by silence. Remembering the misfortune threatened to the servant who hid his God-given talent in the earth (Mat. 25:18–25), I am bound to pass on the holy account that has reached me. …..

Happy Patron Saint’s Day to you (one day late) Many Years!

I cannot believe how quickly Lent went this year.
