The Orthodox convert list

  • It occurred to me since I mentioned the Ortho-convert list again recently that I should give info and a plug for anyone who doesn’t know about it.

It’s an e-mail list-serv — an e-mail forum discussion group for the technologically challenged (like me) — on Yahoo groups. You can register and join up if you want to receive the discussions in your e-mail inbox, or just go and look in on it from time to time if you want to follow discussions without the e-mail baggage (which I would understand — the list has had 362 new messages in the last week, and even though it arrives to me in a digest form that puts whole conversations in one e-mail, it’s still quite intimidating.)

So now that we know what it is, what is it? Here’s the description:

The Orthodox-Converts Mailing List is for discussion between people who have converted to Orthodox Christianity or are interested in Orthodoxy. Cradle Orthodox and Clergy are invited to join to offer advice to those members who are young in the faith.

Young in the faith. Yep, that’s me. Only 20 or so years into this, and I learn things on that list all the time, especially how to verbalize difficult Orthodox concepts for our modern American minds. There are often things that I think I have a handle on but can’t explain to non-Orthodox friends. There are at least as many things that I just plain didn’t know. I think the assortment of people commenting is excellent, but it is still a forum group, so you have to expect some crankiness sometimes. On the whole, very worthwhile.

    You can find it H E R E.

Thanks for the plug! The list owner and I started the group over coffee at Denny’s one night in Phoenix. We’ve worked hard at making it relatively safe and free of flame. Its the best on the net, IMHO.

  • Definitely the best! Well, my opinion doesn’t mean much, since I haven’t tried out any of the other Orthodox lists. But it seemed to me that if I wasn’t interested in *arguing* about Orthodoxy, but in trying to learn it and learn how other people are living it out, I could eliminate most of the other ones out there.

But I’ll be the first to say that I haven’t shopped much. If someone knows of another one that’s light on argument, drop me a line.

    Grace
