The sage sayeth

I just found out that Fr. Jack Sparks passed away on Monday. What a loss for us all! He was such a merry soul. He had this way of making the sign of the cross on your forehead and then giving it a little smack to make it sink it. It worked. (except in my case, he probably should have hit harder)

May his Memory be Eternal.
Memory Eternal!
When I studied under him “way back when,” he called me “Losin’ Susan.” When my mother found this out, she was appalled. I, on the other hand, found it endearing. I learned so much from him. One thing I remember distinctly. He was walking around the classroom one morning, talking about saints who’d been martyred. With misty eyes, he stopped and looked intently at his students. He told us that we were truly missing something if we did not have the honor of being martyred for Christ. It mystified me and intrigued me. Father Jack had a way of talking and writing about a saint as though he had just had tea with him/her and was retelling a vitally important bit of history that connected us to the faith. His legacy will live on in his numerous writings, especially his work in the Orthodox Study Bible. What a life he led! Memory eternal.
Pray for his wife, Esther. I doubt she can remember a day in her life that she did not spend by his side.
This really touched my heart. I wish I had had the pleasure of being instructed by him!
